I don’t know about y’all, but this past week was something crazy. I have this theory that life is like a sine wave (for you math geeks) with its ups and downs. These ups and downs can happen in your personal life or professional life, and sometimes (when we get really lucky) these can overlap. Welcome to my week, stress levels raised. The only way I have found that helps is to make a list of the things that need to be accomplished organized by topic or priority (or both depending on your level of OCD). As you complete things on the list cross them off and take a deep breath. Recognize the steps you have taken towards relieving the stress on you
Work through the stress and know that for all of life’s dips there are rises as well. In thewords of our favorite short term memory fishy friend, “Just keep swimming.” Life isn’t always sunshine and roses, but it also isn’t all storm clouds and darkness. We just have to keep going, keep pushing till we reach the other side. When my dad was first diagnosed and it was hard to think about how things would get better I remembered a movie quote
“Well, I’m gonna get out of bed every morning… breathe in and out all day long. Then, after a while I won’t have to remind myself to get out of bed every morning and breathe in and out…” – Sam Baldwin, Sleepless in Seattle
Sometimes we can’t go it alone and we need to lean on someone else. We need to realize that that is ok. It is not a sign of weakness, it is a sign of our humanity. We are not without our faults or weaknesses, but it is because of these that we also can also find our strengths. Strengths are what give us the fortitude to keep moving, to do what we were meant to do on this Earth.
We need to make time for ourselves. To sit in the silence and figure out who we are and what we want. We need to realize that it is up to us to figure out what makes us happy and pursue those things. If we are not happy in a certain area of our lives we owe it to ourselves to figure out how to make a change in our lives. This is not always easy, the majority of the time this is hard. Change can mean a change of scenery, a change of perspective, or a change of heart. These things take self reflection and courage to take the leap. We need to take continuous steps moving forward even if these steps are baby steps. All forward movement counts.
“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you cant walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward” – Martin Luther King, Jr.
